The Pioneer Valley Web Summit is Here!(Saturday, April 9th, 2011)

Pioneer Valley Web Summit is Western Massachusetts’ first annual web conference. It will be held on Saturday, April 9th, starting at 10:00 AM, in Seelye Hall at Smith College in Northampton, MA. Registration begins at 9:30 AM.

There is no specific focus of this conference, making it accessible to all. We plan on having three rooms active, one of which will be an “unconference” (so bring your session ideas with you!)

Some broad topics you can expect to encounter include: web design, social media, SEO, web development, discussion of CMSs… and anything else web-related! See the “Speakers” page to see who will be presenting, and the Schedule page to track which sessions you would like to attend.

Display Your Company’s Fan Page on Your Work Profile

Tired of the boring pictures of briefcases on your Facebook work profile? Why shouldn’t your bungee jumping company’s mascot, Bungee the Bungee, be grinning at your friends?

If you’re proud of the company you work for, you probably want to spread the word by linking to their Facebook Fan Page in your work profile. With a few simple steps, you can show off your company’s awesome fan page to your friends.

In order to accomplish this, you will need to use a Firefox add-on called Web Developer. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a web developer to use it!)

Let’s get started!

Step 1

Go to Manage Pages, then edit the page and copy the ID number in the URL. If you are not an administrator of the page, find out who is and have them send this information along to you.

Step 2

Navigate to your profile page and click on “Edit Profile”, then select “Education and Work”

Step 3

In Web Developer, click Forms > Display Form Details

Step 4

Above the employer field, you’ll see <”input name=’employer_id”>. In the following field, type the fan page ID

Step 5

In the employer field, type the exact name of your company as displayed on the fan page and select it, click save changes, and you’re done!

My Words Are My Shelter

Mira Bartók, artist, blogger, and author of The Memory Palace, has started a project to help The Norma Herr Women’s Center in Cleveland, OH. The Center is there for women who have fled domestic abuse, are struggling with substance abuse, or are afflicted by poverty or homelessness. Women at the center are encouraged to empower themselves and part of the empowerment process is keeping a journal. This particular Women’s Center is especially dear to Mira, as it was where her mother sought help, and is now named after her mother.

My Words Are My Shelter, Mira’s project, is aiming to donate a box of journals and pens and pencils for each woman at the shelter. Any proceeds above the cost of the journals will be donated to the Center. If you want to and have the ability to help her out, please visit her blog.
