Last Sunday, Septemenber 19th, local artist and Umass graduate student Steve Snell rowed down Connecticut River from Hatfield to Oxbow in Northampton. What made this trip unusual was the fact that he used a wooden boat carved in the stereotypical shape of a couch.

If you are wondering why take a look at Steve’s online portfolio. His work deals with the mythification of nature in the American imagination and popular culture. Although on a press release the artist states that he only wants to prove that “his boat/sculpture/couch truly works”, it is clear that this performance humorously links the commodification of wilderness in mass media and the modern world.

A local news station featured a video of Steve’s trip.
